Course modules

The first year focuses on building key skills in tourism management while cementing the basics of good business, such as people management and marketing.

In the second year, you'll study core modules that cover different practical aspects of tourism management, including destination marketing, strategic management, and finance. You can choose from several optional modules that allow you to focus on themes such as e-business, social media, or events. You can do a work-based project that takes the form of a real internship at an organisation in the tourism industry.

The third year is the overseas placement year for International Tourism students or the final year for those taking the core BA programme. This year you will focus on an individual Research Project, Consultancy Project, or Enterprise Project (for Tourism Entrepreneur students), giving you the chance to apply your skills to a practical project of your choice. You will also study core modules covering innovation and enterprise, sustainable tourism, sports and event tourism, and anthropology with further optional modules to choose from.

NOTE: Modules are subject to change. For those studying part time courses the modules may vary.

Dr Michael Palkowski
What motivates and inspires me is helping to provide opportunities for students from a range of backgrounds. I was from a working-class town, and nobody expected me to go into further education. However, I was given an opportunity to study at a widening participation university and I fell in love with my subject area and eventually went on to do my PhD."

What our students and staff say

Docklands View
I had an amazing three years. The support from lecturers is really helpful and encouraging. Classes are generally small so lecturers and seminar leaders are always happy to give feedback. I loved the course and covered some very interesting topics, many of which have helped me land the job I have today."
