Your future career

Your future career

The work you carry out during this course will help you to demonstrate the knowledge and skills required of senior leaders in schools and other organisations in the area of education.

This distance learning MA degree demonstrates that you can think and function at a higher level, which means that you are more likely to be selected and recruited for promotion.

The research skills you develop on this course are also highly sought after in the current climate.

Sometimes the career progression aided by this course can be subject-specific. For example, a recent course graduate wrote her dissertation on literacy and secured a literacy post within her school as a result.

Students on this course are all employed in schools or other education contexts. On completion of the course they either stay in their current workplace, often in a more senior role, or apply for promotion in a different institution.

I am delighted to offer this new distance learning MA course in education and look forward, very much, to working with you. I believe that this course will have a direct impact on your teaching approaches and help you to become a more rounded, reflective practitioner. I have researched the subject of reflective practice at doctoral level and have published on the subject in various international journals. Unlike other courses, you will not be spoon-fed information upon which you are later assessed. Instead, I will offer regular feedback as you progress, recognising the importance of contractive feedback at an appropriate time. My experience in education goes back to 1993 and, like you, I have experienced academic study and recognise the efforts that are required and the sacrifices necessary to achieve. I look forward to working with you to enable you to fulfil your potential.

What you'll learn

The distance learning MA Education at the University of East London is not purely theoretical. All of the learning interventions and assignments are designed to support you in developing your practice. You will study theories of teaching and learning - how people learn, what motivates them to learn, and how to create independent learners. Modules also cover ways to support the specific needs of individual learners, and how to plan, implement, and evaluate changes in practice. Crucially, you will look at current thinking. Things move extremely fast in education and we regularly update modules to reflect the most up-to-date policy and research.

The content of modules applies to all teachers, rather than being key-stage or subject-specific. Assignments are designed to allow you to personalise your learning. So whatever the context that you work in, you will be able to apply the knowledge gained on the course.

How you'll learn

The course uses an approach to learning which involves a four-stage process: needs analysis, planning, learning and development, and continuous evaluation. This approach might relate to your own practice or be used to identify and plan changes on a whole school basis.

To support each stage of this process you will have expert distance learning input from UEL lecturers as well as engaging with key readings. You will then work with your fellow students in informal discussion groups to exchange ideas, perceptions, and experiences.

Tutors provide guidance and support, but we place an emphasis on reflection. With the typical pace of a teacher's working life, the time and opportunity to reflect and learn in consultation with teachers from other schools is a welcome resource on this course.

All modules allow you to personalise the assessment task to focus on an area of interest or need in your own context. The dissertation provides you with the opportunity to carry out a small-scale research project designed to solve an identified problem.

How you will be assessed

You will be assessed by 100% course work. However, you will be expected to partake in regular reflections.
