Dr Steve Sharman is an Honorary Research Fellow within the School of Psychology. His research primarily focuses on the influence of within-game constructs on gambling behaviour, and virtual reality. Further research interests include gambling and advertising, gambling and homelessness, and gambling in specific vulnerable populations. Furthermore, Dr Sharman is experienced in working with clinical populations of those seeking treatment for disordered gambling.

OVERVIEW
Dr Steve Sharman PhD, MSc, BSc, received his BSc Hons degree in Psychology at the University of East London (UEL).
Dr Sharman was awarded an MSc in Cognitive Neuroscience at UCL after conducting research on decision-making in disordered gambling.
Steve was awarded his PhD from the University of Cambridge, under the supervision of Professor Luke Clark, and Professor Michael Aitken. His thesis examined cognitive distortions in gambling and disordered gambling behaviour.
Since graduating from Cambridge, Steve has worked at the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen), and as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Lincoln.
He was awarded a prestigious Society for the Study of Addiction (SSA) Academic Fellowship to develop his gambling and virtual reality research programme at UEL.
CURRENT RESEARCH
- Gambling in virtual reality: this research examines the near-miss effects on gambling behaviour in virtual environments.
- Gambling in match day programmes: exposure to gambling and alcohol marketing.
