How you'll learn

The programme is supported by an integrated teaching, learning and assessment strategy that demonstrates the appropriateness of the learning, teaching and assessment methods used in relation to the intended learning outcomes. The following methods are adopted:

  • Lectures
  • Tutorials
  • Coursework assignments
  • Seminars
  • Practical work, for example in design workshops
  • Project work
  • Practice sessions and learning through case studies and different site visits

You will become proficient in communicating ideas to a technical and non-technical audience. The programme will help you to think laterally, to solve problems in a structured logical way.

The proposed extension of coursework components to most modules will strengthen the learning strategy by providing opportunities for you to enhance your critical thinking skills to evaluate different management and engineering solutions and adjust your plans in a changing environment. The aim is to enable you to deal with the evolving and open-ended nature of managing projects in the real world. The coursework assignments will require you to use your creativity, management and engineering judgement, applied management skills acquired during your current course plus skills in teamwork and communication.

About the industrial placement year

This course is also available as a two-year master's with an industrial placement year. The industrial placement is designed to address the demands of the profession and give you a competitive edge when it comes to your career. The placement component is up to 12 months in duration, which starts after you have successfully completed the taught modules, and before the dissertation stage.

It is ultimately the student's responsibility to secure their placement. The University will offer guidance and support and recommend students to many of our industrial partners who have expressed strong support and interest in the programme.

If you are an international student on a Tier 4 visa, your CAS will have a course duration of two years, subject to your meeting the UKVI's standard requirements. During the industrial placement period, you undertake an internship within a partner organisation and complete a zero-credit Industrial Placement Module. The criteria for progression to industrial placement is the successful completion of the MSc taught modules with a minimum 50% pass mark.

How you will be assessed

All of the modules will be assessed through coursework and project assignments to provide the opportunity for you to develop your knowledge and understanding in different areas of construction management.
