Since graduating, Mat has spent his time as an entrepreneur, working on projects with over 500 start-ups throughout his career. Right now he invests in companies, mentors new businesses at Seedcamp and holds regular workshops at Google’s London campus – all while studying for his second degree in filmmaking.

Mat originally came to UEL through Clearing to pursue a career in advertising. He studied a Marketing degree and found that his practical qualifications in business and lifelong love of computer games were the perfect ingredients for an internet marketing career.

Just Eat formed in the early days of digital marketing and the company was perfectly suited to Mat’s irreverent sense of humour. A huge part of Just Eat’s early appeal was its defiant and bold marketing strategy, driven by Mat’s desire to – above all – ‘not be boring’. 

Mat joined Just Eat in 2009 and set about establishing the company as the leading brand in takeaway around the world, resulting in one of Europe's biggest tech IPOs for a decade. Mat is one of the few marketers to have taken a consumer startup from series A through to ‘unicorn’ stock status.

Building a brand

His distinctive and daring approach to building a brand has given him a reputation in the industry, enabling him to mentor the next generation of pioneering businesses in various sectors.

Mat offers his time to new start-ups that have a social conscience (such as Updraft), always looking ahead to the ways in which technology, business and creativity combine to build the future.

Mat’s passion for storytelling and love of film inspired him to return to university in order to learn the art of filmmaking, where he hopes to find new ways to express his creativity and tell the stories that inspire him.
