We have a talented and passionate team of academic tutors who help students to build English, maths and IT skills.

Our Academic Tutoring team

Ioannis Lignos - Academic Skills Manager

Dr. Ioannis Lignos supports students at UEL to develop their mathematical, numeracy and statistical skills, as required by their chosen course and career path. He organises workshops and drop-in sessions, and also meets students in one-to-one appointments to discuss their individual needs. Ioannis is a Fellow of the HEA.

He has extensive experience in teaching mathematics and computer science in Higher Education, and has previously helped students succeed in their GCSE and A-level exams. He has research interests in mathematics education, student engagement, and discrete mathematics (algorithms and graph theory).

Greta Millwood - Academic Tutor - Maths (Stratford)

Greta Millwood provides support to students and academic staff in mathematics and statistics.

She sees undergraduate and postgraduate students both one-to-one and in groups, and works particularly closely with HSB in the delivery of workshops relating to specialised uses for mathematics in the various degree programmes, both in academic contexts and for employability.

Her career to date encompasses over two decades’ experience in teaching and research in Higher Education and secondary schools, and she has authored publications on topics ranging from the translation of computer-software to mathematics pedagogy in undergraduate programmes.

 Greta Millwood academic tutor

Pinar Kayacan Aksu - Academic Tutor - English

Pinar’s role involves helping students improve their writing and critical thinking skills so that they can confidently become part of an academic community. Her teaching style is identifying students’ individual needs, and creating a stimulating and supportive learning environment for them.

Pinar has a background in linguistics, English literature and language teaching, and she has worked in various universities in the UK and in Turkey, teaching English language and literature, study skills and academic writing.

Dr Adam Winstanley - Academic Tutor - Writing (Stratford)

Dr Adam Winstanley is an Academic Writing Tutor based at our Water Lane and University Square Stratford campuses in Stratford.

He supports students with the development of their academic language and writing in workshops, drop-in sessions and one-to-one appointments. He covers topics such as essay planning, grammar and punctuation, referencing and critical thinking.

Adam completed his PhD in English at the University of York in 2013. He has previously taught at the University of York, the University of Leeds and Queen Mary, University of London. He has also previously worked as a Lecturer on the New Beginnings course at UEL.
