Sure, London has been in lockdown, but our community is never not inspired by the metropolis we call home.
Our capital is a thriving multi-cultural hub and the University of East London is at the heart of it all. East London is home to disruptive businesses, creative, innovative communities and plenty of green spaces.
To help you navigate our fascinating city during turbulent times, we've collated our favourite picks to keep you connected with the vibrant humans and world-renowned institutions that are moving their work, art and activities to the digital sphere.
Engage with art at the TATE
Tate Modern is located on the south bank of the River Thames in a former power station that, nowadays, fuels London's thirst for modern art. Many of our distinguished academics have exhibited their creations in this iconic building and well before the lockdown was in place our students offered fresh perspectives on pop art in the institution's first ever live streamed art project.
Even if you can't visit the art gallery in person, you can see some of the rooms and artworks within the gallery here. As well as guides, images and a curator's talk through the exhibition, you can take a digital walk through the Tate Modern on the theme of migration or watch some performing art as dancers respond to the collection at Tate Britain.
Get reading with the British Library
If a book gets printed anywhere in the UK, the British Library is sent a copy. The permanent exhibition at the British Library houses some of the world’s most important and beautiful manuscripts including the Magna Carta, Gutenberg's Bible and the original handwritten copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Take a trip down the rabbit hole as you explore the library's collection online here.
Celebrate art and design with the Victoria & Albert Museum
The beautiful Victoria & Albert Museum is home to one of the world's greatest art and design collections and they work alongside the University of East London in course development and delivery. If you're interested in art and design or simply a little curious, you can delve behind the scenes of the V&A through the BBC documentary Secrets of the Museum. Or take a journey through 5000 years of human creativity with the extensive online collection here.
Get active in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park
It's important to get our daily fix of exercise for mental as well as physical wellbeing. If you're in east London, the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park combines world renowned sporting centres with leafy parklands and waterways. Go for a jog and observe the trees blooming around you, marvel at the former Olympic and Paralympic venues like the Copper Box Arena and Lee Valley VeloPark or take an amble alongside the canal and spot the ever changing graffiti around Hackney Wick.
