
Dr Stuart Connop
Associate Professor in Sustainability
Dr Stuart Paul Connop is Associate Professor in Sustainability, specialising in invertebrate conservation and ecomimicry in urban green infrastructure to deliver nature-based solutions that support multifunctionality in design and performance. Having completed a PhD investigating the habitat requirements of UK Biodiversity Action Plan bumblebee species, Stuart has an active involvement in invertebrate ecology including habitat assessment, design, monitoring and management.
Areas Of Interest
A broad range of interests associated with the sustainable management of our urban and rural landscapes. This includes research and consultancy on green and blue infrastructure, including nature-based solutions. Research has focused on innovative design, delivery and legacy of ground-level and roof level greenspace.
OVERVIEW
Having completed a PhD investigating the habitat requirements of UK Biodiversity Action Plan bumblebee species, Stuart has an active involvement in invertebrate ecology including habitat assessment, design, monitoring and management. His background includes biodiversity and ecosystem service monitoring and the associated data analysis, including the use of spatial analysis and Pantheon invertebrate assemblage analysis to quantify habitat quality. Stuart is currently co-work package lead on the Connecting Nature EU Horizon 2020 project where he is supporting cities across Europe in delivering nature-based solutions.
Within Connecting Nature, his focus is on upscaling technical design and developing and delivering evaluation indicators for nature-based solutions. He was also a work package lead on the EU FP7 project TURAS, where he led and co-delivered research on Urban Green Infrastructure (UGI) design and monitoring in partnership with numerous stakeholder including developing scoping programmes for UGI retrofit for social landlords and UGI-focused Local Authority Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems planning guidance. Stuart's research has a strong focus on impact and includes knowledge exchange with Natural England, the Environment Agency and numerous NGOs. Stuart was a steering advisor on Buglife's national Urban Buzz programme and also sat on the European Commission Working Group for Green Infrastructure.
He has delivered presentations on impact-driven urban green infrastructure research for Innovate UK (the UK Horizon 2020 contact point), the UK Green Building Council, and the European Commission's DG Research & Innovation.

Currently working on the EU H2020 funded project Connecting Nature and the ERDF funded project ARENA. Also delivering research through consultancy projects associated with nature-based solutions, biodiversity net-gain and invertebrate conservation.
