Congratulations to Dr Paul Penn, senior lecturer in the School of Psychology, who has been named as higher education (HE) psychology teacher of the year 2021.  The British Psychological Society Division of Academics, Researchers & Teachers in Psychology (BPS DARTP) and Oxford University Press announced the award on 22 June.

A winning case study on transforming the communication and accessibility of evidence-based advice from psychology on how to study effectively impressed the judges at BPS DARTP and Oxford University Press (OUP). Along with the award, Paul receives £1,500, a year of free membership to BPS DARTP and £250 worth of OUP books.

I'm delighted beyond measure and massively honoured to win the higher education psychology teacher of the year award. I have long argued that helping students to study more effectively is one of psychology's most important applications. This award recognises my efforts, but more importantly, also illuminates the hard work of all higher education staff involved in the scholarship of helping students to succeed in their degrees,"

Paul Penn, senior lecturer at UEL School of Psychology

Paul is also the author of The Psychology of Effective Studying: How to Succeed in Your Degree. As a first-generation university student, he is passionate about empowering all students to succeed at degree level. He believes that helping students study more effectively is one of psychology's most important, yet unsung, benefits to society. Professor Steven Pinker, Johnstone Family professor of psychology at Harvard University, commented that, "Dr Penn’s book is an excellent invitation to these fascinating and enormously practical discoveries."

Dr Paul Penn is a fellow of Advance HE , a Chartered Psychologist and leader of the forthcoming Cyberpsychology BSc programme at UEL. He is also working on projects to develop a YouTube channel where students from all disciplines can gain access to free advice on how to study effectively.
