The University of East London (UEL) has secured second place in the AWS Educate Challenge.

The AWS Educate Challenge, run by Amazon Web Services, is an inter-university challenge where students from universities across the UK and Ireland compete to win prizes by earning points for completing each of the AWS Educate pathways and badges. Along the way, they enhance their knowledge of cloud computing.

As well as UEL ranking second as a University, two students studying masters in computer science placed in the top 30 winning students for the UK.

Gaurav Malik, senior lecturer in computer science and informatics at UEL, said,

We are very excited to be placed second in the AWS Educate Challenge. Our students across the various Schools worked hard to complete pathways and badges, helping UEL rise up the leader board.

"Through the knowledge acquired via the challenge they have become career ready in cloud technologies,"

Dr Paul Marshall, pro-vice chancellor for careers and enterprise, said, "At UEL, we work hard to help produce graduates with the skills, tools and competencies sought by employers and entrepreneurs in a rapidly changing world.

"The rapid rise of cloud computing is creating a growing number of high-quality jobs at organisations around the world, and the technical skills that students develop through AWS Educate will position them well for their careers today and in the future."

Cloud computing has been listed as an in-demand skill required by employers on LinkedIn since 2014. The University is a proud member of AWS Educate, which provides students and educators with access to content and programmes developed to skill up for cloud careers in growing fields.

Students can enrol in AWS Educate Cloud Career Pathways to learn essential skills in cloud computing and earn digital credentials upon completion. Each Pathway, which is aligned to in-demand job roles such as Machine Learning Scientist and Application Developer, includes 25+ hours of self-paced content. AWS Educate also connects companies hiring for cloud skills to qualified student job seekers with the AWS Educate Job Board.

One of the successful students, Lakshmirajyam Avula, said: "I am delighted to be a winner and for UEL to be placed in second position in AWS Educate Challenge.

"Completing the Badges and Pathways earned me a lot of knowledge on AWS Cloud services and motivated me to prepare for AWS Certifications. It also made me passionate to build my career and I'm looking forward to working in cloud technologies."
