Talal Rafi, a Sri Lankan entrepreneur who graduated from the University of East London (UEL), has been appointed to the prestigious Forbes Business Council.

Talal graduated from the University of East London’s Royal Docks School of Business and Law with a first-class degree in BA Hons Business Management. After many years as a consultant and entrepreneur, he was recently asked to join the Forbes Business Council, an invitation-only group of successful business leaders from around the world, run under the auspices of Forbes magazine.

It is a great opportunity to join the Forbes Business Council. My experience studying at the University of East London helped a lot. The diverse culture at the University and exposure to different perspectives helped me get ready for the business world.

"My business management course geared me to take on the world of business as the degree finely balanced all the elements for business leadership. The lecturers played an important role as many were more like mentors and went out of their way to advise me,"

Talal Rafi, UEL business management alumnus, said.

The selection committee appointed Talal for his "expertise, contribution and leadership in the field of entrepreneurship".

Talal is the co-founder of the co-working space-turned-business advisory company Hubpoint. He has also co-founded other ventures including Venture Green and T3Follow.

Talal is also an entrepreneurship specialist at the USAID Project YouLead and he serves on the board of directors of the Global Entrepreneurship Network for Sri Lanka.

As an industry expert at the Moratuwa University Entrepreneurship Center - part of the World Bank AHEAD Project - he supports the development of entrepreneurship ecosystems. In 2019, he was appointed as Sri Lanka's representative to the World Business Angel Investment Forum and he is also a member of the National Agenda Committee for Entrepreneurship Ecosystem at the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.

Professor Paul Marshall, pro vice-chancellor for careers and enterprise, said, "We were delighted to hear that Talal's contribution to Sri Lanka's business community has been recognised. Aligned with Vision 2028, our 10-year institutional strategy, the University of East London is dedicated to ensuring that students like Talal have the strongest foundation to their careers and also, crucially, use their talents to make a positive impact on their local communities."
