A series of animations created by University of East London students has been aired as part of the Animatex Film Festival in Egypt.

Pooja Pottenkulam, an animation and film lecturer at the University of East London, presented the animated People We Know to a festival audience. It is an ongoing collaborative project which invites University of East London students to engage with the world around them and create a short animation based on people and characters they come across in their day-to-day lives.

Ms Pottenkulam discussed how the animated documentary format is a good way to engage students with their immediate communities. She also discussed how the process to curate the animations can help students take real-life stories to build their own characters for animation.

Having the opportunity to present the work we do at the UEL to an international audience was amazing and I am really proud that we got the chance to share our students' work,"

Pooja Pottenkulam, UEL film lecturer, said.

Dr Ian Pickup, pro vice-chancellor (education and experience), said, "It is fantastic to see the work that our students are doing showcased to an international audience. We are focused on ensuring our students thrive in a careers-first environment which means that once they graduate, they will have a skillset which puts them ahead of the jobs market. By providing opportunities such as this, we are helping build their networks and get that first step on the career ladder."

The Animatex Film Festival aims to bring the animation industry together to showcase all aspects of the industry and create opportunities for networking and collaboration.

During the presentation, 14 student and graduate films were showcased to demonstrate the talent and work of University of East London film students:

  • Miles Fleet
  • Morgan Carson Bretnall
  • Lauren Street
  • Britnee Tovar
  • James Avedissian
  • Eloise Garlick
  • Omar Khan
  • Raquel Soares
  • Alexander Forrester
  • Dominic Pinnegar
  • Charlee Trewick
  • Juan Martin Gonzalez
  • Najette Chouchane
  • Agata Angielska
