Navigating race and self-representation – panel discussion
The event, held as part of Black History Month, will delve into the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and class and their impact on African and Caribbean experiences and self-representation.
Explore how 20th-century activism reshaped African and Caribbean identity and the role of mainstream media in shaping perceptions. We will address the authenticity of portrayals in media, the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ African and Caribbean, and how UK universities can either challenge or reinforce dominant narratives.
The panel, featuring Dr Jummy Okoya, Leroy Logan MBE, Lady Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, Pauline Miller, Professor Bugewa Apampa, and Professor Winston Morgan, will also discuss how universities can better support Black students and scholars, focusing on mentorship and networking to foster success.
