  • Creating leaders

Our Health Science MRes and Public Health MSc courses are unique in London in the way they enable students to develop the leadership and management qualities that are in such high demand in the healthcare sector.

  • world-class research

Our health studies researchers made a major contribution to our superb performance in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, in which 86 per cent of our Allied Health submission was rated either ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. This makes us the top modern university in London for our area of research and eighth in the country.

  • good career move

The Health Science MRes course stands alone in offering a module on strategy in commissioning. Anyone wanting to work in the upper echelons of the NHS or other healthcare sectors needs to understand this area of operation.

Why us?

Doing a master’s degree in the field of health studies will give you the crucial understanding of research techniques and management principles that will enable you to develop your career as a health professional.

Whether you are working in the NHS, private health services, a community health organisation or a related commercial sector, you’ll benefit from the supercharging effect of a year (or two years part time) in a superbly resourced environment that’s contributing to world-leading research.

If you are working in a clinical setting, you may well reach a point at which you cannot progress without some kind of additional training and management competency.

UEL Docklands Campus

The postgraduate health studies courses that we offer are unique in London in terms of preparing you for management and will put you firmly on the promotion ladder.

"There’s no-one else in London that I know of that offers this kind of opportunity to develop leadership and management skills," says Dr Matthew Almond, Field Leader in Health Studies.

"That’s what the market research has told us and all the NHS trusts tell us that this is what they’re most interested in."

I volunteered with Well London as a student and the work I did was invaluable in helping me know what to do on my first internship in Nigeria. It gave me the knowledge and experience I really needed.

What we're researching

Health studies played a significant part in UEL’s research submission in Allied Health Professions (Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy) that was such a big winner in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework – the six-yearly national review of research quality in higher education.

An expert panel rated 67 per cent of the research as ‘internationally excellent’ and 19 per cent of it as ‘world-leading’, the highest possible accolade.

Our research into public health links in with UEL’s internationally renowned Institute for Health and Human Development (IHHD), which regularly carries out research across the UK and overseas.

The IHHD has been heavily involved in more than 50 significant projects since its foundation in 2006. UEL staff and students have researched into and developed programmes to improve health and wellbeing, particularly in some of London’s poorest communities.
