Student journalists investigate barriers to football careers

Civic Engagement Fund 2015

Breaking down barriers was an exciting collaboration between UEL sports journalism staff and students, Kick it Out, an organisation which promotes equality and diversity in football, and the Football Supporters’ Federation.

The project encouraged young people with an interest in writing and journalism to consider and discuss the barriers that prevent people from choosing a career in football, specifically in sports journalism, and how these barriers can be overcome.

During a series of outreach events in east London schools, UEL students ran workshops with sixth-form students. The workshops offered activities and presentations which helped the young people reflect on their experiences and understanding of equality and diversity issues, as well as gain insight into studying and working in football writing. The pupils were encouraged to think of initiatives that would challenge discrimination through writing.

The work of the participants was celebrated at a conference which showcased their achievements.
