Access to Learning Fund

The Access to Learning Fund (ALF) provides discretionary financial assistance to students to helping them to access and remain in higher education. In particular students who need extra assistance to meet the costs that cannot be met from other sources of support. The fund can help to alleviate unexpected financial difficulties. Students who may be considering leaving higher education because of financial difficulties are encouraged to apply.

Who is eligible?

Students must be “UK/home students"

Students can apply if they are:

  • Undergraduates (full time, part time and distance learners)
  • Postgraduates (full time, part time and distance learners)
  • On a sandwich course
  • PGCE students
  • NHS students

Overseas students, EU students and students who fall outside standard residency requirements are NOT eligible.

Students must have maximised their income by applying for full Student Support from Student Finance England and must have received their first instalment. Postgraduate students must show that they have made adequate provision prior to start of their course to cover tuition fees and living costs i.e. a Professional Career Development Loan.

How to apply

ALF is open from Monday 21st October 2013 to Friday 30th May 2014 (earlier if all funds are allocated prior to the deadline). Download the application form and guidance notes here. Please ensure you complete the bank account details at the end of the form as all awards will be made via BACS.
