Recently, Continuum welcomed Australian scholar Dr. Sam Sellar from the University of Queensland, who delivered a very interesting presentation entitled "Raising aspiration in Australian higher education". Sam's talk introduced us to how notions of aspiration fit in to the higher education context in Australia, before turning to an examination of the rise of aspiration in education policy both in Australia and the UK. The presentation also covered the rise of aspiration as a cultural and political category, and Sam drew on ideas and theories from Cultural Studies to posit that the idea of "aspiration" is a complex one, and is an area where more research and thinking is needed to fully understand the subtleties behind the ways in which politicians invoke the idea of raising aspirations as a straightforward and uncomplicated task. Sam’s presentation was very well received, and we hope to be posting the video from this on our new Continuum blog over the coming weeks.
The Continuum blog, although very much still in its infancy, will provide a more casual space for news and information, video and audio, and engaging discussions about widening participation. To view the blog, please click here.
