Your future career

Your future career

You can choose to use the skill set that you develop within sport psychology in a number of ways.  Some students have gone on to pursue external governing body recognition as sport psychologists while others have used the skills to enhance other career options, e.g. one former British student was a tennis coach who got a position at an NCAA D1 university as head coach immediately on graduation.

You will develop your skills and knowledge in a directly applied context, further supported by industry experience through the placement module. This will ensure that you are 'employment ready' in your knowledge, skills and experience. The strong industry experience and contacts of our staff team also mean that you will be well-connected to potential jobs as they arise.

In addition, you will be encouraged to make full use of the range of employability resources available through the Careers Centre and LinkedIn Learning.

Explore the different career options you can pursue with this degree and see the median salaries of the sector on our Career Coach portal.

The teaching throughout my time at UEL was excellent. We were a small cohort that made the experience even better. Taught by an engaging, strong and inspiring academic team that brought in celebrity external speakers to offer a rich breadth of experiences and knowledge, we were introduced to potential research opportunities on a domestic and international level."

What you'll learn

You will learn the theoretical underpinning of sport psychology practice before going on to consider how this is implemented, first in a classroom environment and then in a real sports setting. We look at current topics from a theoretical perspective and then look at how a sport psychologist may apply this within a real-world setting. All of the aspects covered within the theory module can be applied later. An example would be the importance of the coach-athlete relationship something that comes up time and again within the applied sport psychology world.

The research component of the course initially gives you the necessary tools of measurement to make an informed decision on how to go about gathering data for a larger project within an area that you find interesting in sport psychology.

How you'll learn

We are investing in key areas beyond your studies including our career services, library and well-being, to be available both face-to-face on campus and online with many of these available 24/7. We have new, modern library facilities on both campuses offering inspirational environments for study and research. Libraries contain resources in print and digital formats, a range of study spaces and a dedicated librarian who can assist with your learning. Students are supported with any academic or subject-related queries by an academic advisor, or module leaders.

If you need a bit of extra help with certain skills such as academic writing, English, maths or statistics, our academic tutors offer workshops, drop-in sessions and one-to-one appointments to help our students achieve their potential. You can receive advice and guidance on all aspects of the IT systems provided by the university from our IT Service Desks located on all three campuses.

Our Student Support hubs in Docklands and Stratford feature centralised helpdesks to cater for your every need. UEL provides also support and advice for disabled students and those with specific learning difficulties (SPDs).

How you will be assessed

This programme will consist of 6 modules (180 credits) over the course of 12 months/3 terms.

All modules are individual (30 credits) except the independent research project which is a double module (60 credits). Students work on a theory to practice teaching strategy.

Assessment tasks are mainly spread across the year to make the workload manageable. There is a diverse range of assessment methods that include essays, presentations, case studies, professional development, reflective work and practical activities. All grades count towards your module mark. More details will be included in the student handbook and module guides.
