University of East London Innovation and Enterprise Summer Festival
Registration is now open for our University of East London Innovation and Enterprise Summer Festival – a scientific spectacle you won’t want to miss.
Prepare for a fusion of fun, as on Wednesday 12 June, from 3 to 8pm, our Stratford campus will be transformed into a playground of innovation. The festival theme is the Year of Science! Register now and book in for your favourite activities.
Activities and attractions
Our events team, in collaboration with the Schools and Service teams, have organised an explosive lineup of attractions including the following:
Year of Science-themed
- Mobile planetarium (booking required)
Take a breathtaking journey to the edge of the Solar System, past our solar neighbourhood, beyond our magnificent Milky Way galaxy to the edge of the known universe.
- Digital mosaic
During the event, all the images from the virtual booth and the selfie pod will be added to a live digital mosaic.
- QR photo game
Scan the QR code and use the virtual photo booth from your phone or tablet.
- AI photobooth
A unique and captivating way to create unforgettable memories. Transform simple photos into an exciting experience with the help of artificial intelligence.
- Nitrogen ice cream
See your favourite ice cream freezing instantly at –196oC with liquid nitrogen. The first 800 to register on the day will receive a free ice cream.
- Laser drink printing
Celebrate UEL’s Year of Science by printing the special logo onto your favourite drink. The laser drinks printer also gives you the opportunity to print a monochrome photo directly on the surface of a foamy drink.
Join former BSc Biomedical Science Alum Big Manny in a spectacular experiment demonstrating energy release in action
Big Manny will be at our Innovation and Enterprise Summer Festival where you will be able to watch his screaming jelly baby experiment on the main stage. You’ll also be able to hear Big Manny’s experience of being a UEL student at our Open Evening welcome talk and Medical Sciences subject talk.
Educational showcase themed
- Hood weather installation
Within Hood, the visitor’s acoustic experience of the weather conditions is subtly exaggerated. When it drizzles, it sounds like it’s raining, when it’s raining the visitor experiences rolling thunder in the distance; when there is a breeze, strong winds ripple through the tree tops and as the temperature starts to rise, the listener hears insects, birds and animals from hotter climes.
- Elevate main stage graduate takeover
The ELEVATE takeover will showcase the creativity and cutting-edge innovation of students from UEL's School of Arts and Creative Industries.
- Gaming van
The gaming van will showcase video games designed by students from UEL's School of Arts and Creative Industries.
- Tours of the Hospital and Primary Care Training Hub (booking required)
Explore the ground-breaking Hospital and Primary Care Training Hub which incorporates augmented and virtual reality technologies to further innovate an inter-professional healthcare education.
- Viewing student work from London Fashion Week
UEL’s Fashion Department will showcase the work of its emerging talented creative designers.
- Meet with UEL schools and services and learn how you can get involved with all areas of the University
Examples include: our Legal Advice Centre will be there for current and prospective students and their families to provide information on pursuing Law as a career and the services we provide to the community; find out more about how students can study abroad with our Global Experiences team and much more.
- Immerse yourself in virtual environments
Understand how psychologists are using VR/AR to enhance our understanding of the interplay of perception, cognition, and emotion
- Enjoy a multisensory hands-on demo
Explore how our senses shape our understanding of the world, from the way we perceive colour and sound to the intricacies of taste and touch, illuminating the complex interplay between sensory input and psychological processes
- Discover evidence-based strategies for enhancing well-being
Engage in coaching demonstrations and taster sessions to explore practical techniques for cultivating resilience, happiness, and fulfilment with our current students and alumni from the MSc Applied Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology
- Family fun activity for all ages
Craft anatomically accurate brain models, integrating art and science to deepen your understanding of brain structure and function, fostering creativity while exploring the marvels of neuroscience
- Visit our inspiring showcase featuring the stellar work of our Level 6 Clinical & Community Psychology students
Join us for an engaging tour of the BabyDevLab, where cutting-edge research on infant development unfolds
Sustainability themed
- Make a monster plushie (booking required)
In this workshop, you will be guided through designing and building your own monster fabric plushie. This will be achieved by glueing fabrics together to create the main shape of the monster and adding features such as eyes, horns, mouth, and fangs by glueing and stitching. Finally, the creature will be stuffed with wooding to make it soft and huggable.
- Design your own sneakers (booking required)
Join footwear designer and maker Hernan in this playful workshop to design and ‘build’ different types of shoes using recycled materials. Participants will be challenged to create artwork in the shape of shoes using diverse materials such as cardboard, plastics, food packaging, fabrics and anything interesting found in a recycling bin. Materials will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own!
- Relove your clothes (booking required)
Have you got a piece of old clothing that needs a refresh? Has a button fallen off your favourite jacket? Or would you just like to learn some techniques to be prepared when it does? Come along to this workshop aimed at giving you the skills to upcycle and repair your clothing.
- Not so humble anymore! (booking required)
A creative workshop which will explore how to up-cycle the humble household plastic bag! For those who love experiments and mixing of unexpected textures which are not normally found together.
- Make your own feather bracelets and necklaces (booking required)
A fun workshop where you will learn how to make beautiful necklaces or bracelets from found objects, including feathers. All materials are provided but people are encouraged to bring their own.
- Animal magical puppets (booking required)
Children will get to make their own animal puppets and learn how to puppeteer them, using cardboard, glue, tape and sticks as a base then decorating them with recycled and waste materials.
- It's a Doll
Feeling stressed or anxious? Visit the Sincerely Sheila stand and cuddle a baby doll to help release oxytocin, promoting emotional well-being. You'll also discover how to bring your long-time innovations to life.
- Come knit with us!
Join Colechi to learn the art of upcycling through knitting and other styling techniques.
- Textile art
Have old clothing or materials you can't bear to part with? Elfreda will show you how to transform them into artwork in her textile art workshop.
